Kaurna Culture
Our Kindergarten is on Kaurna Native Title land, and our Aboriginal Cultural program focuses on Kaurna Culture.
Uncle Tamaru, A Kaurna Elder will teach the children Kaurna language, lore about ceremony, plants, animals, and story telling symbols. We focus on reconciliation and tiarti or truth telling.
We learn about and value Ngaitalya, respect for ourselves, each other, our resources and Mother Earth.
We acknowledge Country every day in Kaurna language. We learn and practice new words in context.
Uncle Tamaru walks on Country with us at some Bush Kindy sessions and we learn about bush tucker, bush medicine and wildlife from an Aboriginal perspective.
We engage with other Aboriginal educators for weaving, art and music.
Padniadlu wadu means walking together and is the name of our community Reconciliation garden on Avenue Rd. You are welcome to taste or use the plants according to their purpose.
Bush Kindy sessions
In Terms 2 and 3 on Friday mornings, we have Bush Kindy sessions in Belair National Park instead of sessions at the kindergarten. Parents drop off and pick up children at a designated area of the park. This is usually Joseph Fisher area in Term 2 and Pines 1 area in Term 3. Parents are most welcome to attend as a helper. There will be more information including a risk assessment given to families before Bush Kindy begins.
Children will need
- Rubber boots
- Warm and waterproof jacket
- Change of clothing including socks and shoes
- Hat
- Snacks
- Lunch
- Water bottle
We will provide waterproof pants for children at Bush Kindy. These are worn over their own leggings, track pants etc.
Children will be asked to wear a high viz vest over their coat for extra safety. These are also provided.
Extra-curricular sessions
We offer children the opportunity to engage in an interest based session after Kindy 3pm to 4pm. All enrolled children are welcome to join in. Working parents have found these sessions very useful for extending their hours. If the after Kindy session is on your child's day you can pick up at 4pm. If the session is not on your child's Kindy day you can drop off at 3pm and pick up at 4pm.
We provide the venue, and there is at least one staff member at Kindergarten until 4pm. Third party providers run the sessions and are paid directly. Commitment is for one term at a time and preferably the year. The providers need minimum numbers of children in a class to make providing these sessions worthwhile. There is information at Kindergarten regarding these programs.
Mondays: Gymnastics by 22Too
Tuesdays: Tai Kwon Do
Wednesdays: Ballet with Carole Ann. Children change at kindy into ballet gear and are walked next door with a staff member to the ballet studio in the Stirling Community Theatre. Children are picked up from the ballet studio upstairs at 4pm.
Thursdays: Yoga with Amanda from Little Lights Yoga. Amanda also works with all our children during some sessions on mindfulness and wellbeing.
